What I learned from fine artists

In speaking with some of the artists at the Shediac Arts Festival I learned that there seems to be two camps. Those who sketch and plan out their pieces and those who simply attack the canvas. As a designer I sketch a lot, however I am beginning to question my analytical methods. Of course research will always be necessary but perhaps when one has that all too elusive "spark", it should be chased down at the expense of thorough analysis.

I've found that each project is different. Some sparks come on their own in a more instantaneous way, and others have to be teased out by lengthy research/sketching/exploration/formal exercises. This is true for me whether I'm designing or writing.

I think the key is to listen to your instincts and getting a sense of what 's appropriate for the given job.
